The World

The circle that closes: completion, integration, and the ending that is already a new beginning.

The World closes the journey of the Major Arcana. Twenty-one is completion and fullness: the point at which everything that has been crossed — from the Fool's first step — finds its finished form. It is not an ending that extinguishes, but a circle that closes in harmony, ready to open again at a higher level.

The symbolism of the card

A dancing figure is enclosed within an oval wreath of laurel, holding a wand in each hand. At the four corners of the card appear four figures: a man, an eagle, a lion and a bull — the four fixed points, the elements, the four faces of totality. The wreath forms an almost perfect circle around the dance.

The dance at the centre is harmony attained, the serene movement of one who feels whole; the two wands recall the Magician of the beginning, but now the energy is mastered on both planes. The wreath is the completed cycle, the crown of the path; the four figures at the corners are the whole world framing it — nothing is excluded, everything finds its place. It is the image of integration: separate parts becoming one.

The The World upright

Upright, the World is completion, fulfilment and integration. It marks the reaching of a goal, the happy close of a cycle, the sense of fullness in one who has crossed a path and comes out whole. It is the card of "I have arrived": a deserved achievement, a phase concluding in harmony.

It invites you to recognise and celebrate what you have completed, and to see that every ending is also a threshold. The World unites the parts — inner and outer — into a coherent whole: it is success that is not only external, but felt within. When it appears, something truly comes to completion, and from there a new circle can begin.

The The World reversed

Reversed, the World speaks of incompleteness: a cycle that will not close, a goal near but not yet reached, the sense that the last step is missing. Something stays unresolved, and with it the difficulty of turning the page.

It can indicate a closure sought but postponed, goals left half-done, or the need to finish what you started before you can set out again. The invitation is to complete rather than leave hanging: to identify what is really missing — often it is little — and to grant yourself the closure that lets you open the next chapter.

The The World in love

Upright, the World in love is fullness and completion: a relationship reaching an important milestone, a bond that feels whole and harmonious, or the sense of having found what you were looking for. Reversed, it points to something unfinished: a story that will not close or consolidate, a missing step to feeling truly fulfilled, or the need to conclude one chapter before opening another.

The The World in work and money

On the professional plane, the upright World is the goal reached: a project brought to a successful end, the completion of a long path, the recognition of a deserved result. It often marks the close of one phase and the opening of a new one. Reversed, it signals a goal near but not yet grasped, details left hanging, or the difficulty of considering finished what falls just short: better to complete before setting out again.

How to read the The World in spreads

A card's meaning shifts with the position it occupies. Here is how the The World behaves in the most common spreads.

In the Celtic Cross

In posizione di present situation It describes a moment of completion and integration: a cycle closing in harmony, a goal reached.

In posizione di obstacle What holds you back, if anything, is something unfinished: a last step missing before a true close.

In posizione di near future It promises a fulfilment on its way, the happy close of an important phase.

In the Three Card spread (past · present · future)

Nel past It tells of a completed cycle, a path that reached its full form.

Nel present It catches you on the threshold of a completion: something is closing in harmony.

Nel future It signals fulfilment and integration: the circle will close, ready to open again higher up.

Common mistakes in interpretation

The World is sometimes read as an absolute ending, a point of arrival that closes and nothing more. But in the language of tarot every completion is also a threshold: the circle that closes is the same one that opens again at a new level. Reading it only as a conclusion loses its truest quality — the fullness from which another journey sets out.
